Ship "Index".

13). Frigates, "Leanders".

These ships, a final development of the earlier "Type 12's", featured in the next section - ( 13a ) -  on this site,
could justifiably be called the finest sea keeping ships to have sailed in recent years with the RN.
They were developed by Ken Purvis and his team from the earlier "Type 12's"
to dispense with the need for the contemporary 3 separate "Utility" classes then existing, ie:- types 14's, 41's, and 61's.
as they were becoming outdated and outclassed.
The "Type 12's" and these later, "Modified Type 12's", finally called the "Leander Class",
were to carry out the roles of these 3 other ship types, and, unlike most other previous "compromise" designs, they were, by and large, successful.

M
any saw action, alongside their older siblings, the "Type 12's", with the RN during the "Falklands War".
These fine ships were, once sold off, to see service with several of the worlds navies well into the 1990's.
