Ship "Index".

13b). - Frigates, type 14's.

This class of ship, the type 14 "Blackwood class",  was produced in the 1950's as a much cheaper "Utility" A.S.W. Convoy Escort frigate to solely hunt submarines, a task at which they excelled.

They were only just over 1/2 the size of the contemporary "type 12 - Whitby class" and had only 1/2 of their powerplant. They could still, however, achieve around 27 knots which made them perfectly adequate to chase and localize submarines, even those versions, then just coming into service, that had been updated using the knowledge gained from studying captured WW11 German type XX1 u-boats.

The type 14's had a minimal gun armament with only 3 x 40mm. bofors guns, but they were well equipped to destroy submarines with 2 x triple tubed "Limbo" mk.10 ASW Mortars and 4 x 21" torpedo tubes.
