Ship "Index".

10). Destroyers, - WW1 to present.

As this section is so large, containing well over 400 separate ships, and is set to become even larger, I have tried my best to separate the ships
into something on the lines of their "representative groupings".
This being either by "era of build" or "type" or "class" or "what-have-you".
I have tried to keep in a separate section, at the bottom of this page, those ships that were in service either just before WW
1, or the very early part of it.

This one large section, therefore,
covers nearly the whole evolution of "Destroyers". From the fairly modest "Mid to Late WW1 Emergency builds",
the highly successful, late WW1 "V & W" classes, and the many modifications that they then underwent to suit them for WW11 service.
It then passes on through the "Post WW1 A class" along with the many and various inter war year series, that were, basically, updated versions of the earlier "V & W's".

It also shows the "Tribals", the between war late 1930's "Emergency Build" ships, the "Hunt Class" Escort Destroyers, the  American "Lend Lease Town Class",
and on up to the late WW11 "Battle, Weapon and C, CA, CH, CO and CR" classes. Many of these later ships served with the R.N. well into the late 1960's,
some even later than that, having been sold on to "Foreign Navy's"
.

There are also some examples of Royal Australian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy ships in here,
along with those of other nations that served alongside us in WW11, in common with the other sections of my site.
The later post WW11 "Darings", - "County Class G.M.D's", - "Type 42's" - and, now the newest of them all, the "Type 45's",
I have put into their own separate "Index" sections
and these can be found in the "Type of Ship Index" section.
The really "odd man out" here in this section though must be the "Type 82", HMS Bristol.
HMS Bristol was built as a forerunner for a whole class of new "Destroyer" intended to act as "Escorts" and "Air Defence" ships for a new class of "Aircraft Carrier".
Those, however, were never to see the light of day due to the Labour Governments "Defence cuts" of the mid 1960's.
"HMS Bristol" lingered on for several years, and many of her old company hold fond memories of her.
Sadly she has now gone, as also has most of the RN and its "force projection capabilities".

The Royal Navy was once the envy of the world, but this country is now left with but a still diminishing shadow of its former Navy.
( and all the other services it must be said ).

"Hunt" class, ( all groups )

The Royal Navy had identified a need for two types of destroyer; larger vessels with heavy gun and torpedo armaments for "fleet" work, and another type for "fast escort" duties. Although "old" fleet destroyers, such as the "V & W's" above, could be allocated to escort work, as new construction replaced them, they were unsuitable for the task. Fleet destroyers were designed for speed and their machinery was inefficient at convoy speeds, reducing their range. Their shape made them poor sea boats at low speed, also exacerbated by additional equipment on the superstructure. Many modifications were needed to ease these problems.

The "Fast escort" vessels forsook the heavy armament and some of the speed of the fleet type to reduce unit cost and to better suit mass production. This new vessel "was later classified as an "escort destroyer" and the many variations to the "Hunt Class" is the result.

WW11 "Tribal" Class.
These ships were originally designed pre-war as a replacement for the "C & D" class light cruisers. In that they were a failure, but the design lived on and became this heavily armed "Fleet Destroyer".
Only one of these fine ships now remains as a "Museum piece, and she is the HMCS "Haida", and is preserved at Hamilton, Ontario.

"Battle Class" all groups.

Designed with the "Pacific Theatre" in mind, these ships had a much better A.A. fit than the then current RN Destroyer types, and also had a heavier 4.5" set up using twin mounting turrets rather than the existing single gun mounts.

The Later Australian Navy "Battles" were also known as the "Anzac" class and were fitted with the more modern Mk V1 Twin mountings as were fitted to newer RN ships.

"C, Ca, Ch, Cr, Co," Classes.

The "C" class was a class of 32 destroyers and
were built as part of the War Emergency Programme between 1943 and 1945, based on the hull and machinery of the pre-war J class.

( The sole surviving "C" Class example, HMS Cavalier can be found preserved at Chatham Royal Naval Dockyard Museum. )

"Town" Class.

There were originally 50 of these American WW1 vintage destroyers provided to us under the "Lend - Lease" agreement, for which we gave up many shore bases in exchange.
They were roughly the equivalent of the RN's WW1 "V & W" class. Unfortunately major re-fits and expensive alterations were required before they were at all suitable for RN service.

There are probably some early "S & T" class WW1 ships in amongst these that really should be in the "WW1 Destroyer" section.
